What is Data Mining?

Data Mining is literally that.  If you picture a giant quarry being mined for everything of value, that’s pretty much what data mining is in the context of online poker.  Put simple, it’s the relentless acquisition of data from the hands played by other players through the use of specialized software.

The whole purpose of gathering this data is for the software to analyze it and help guide your playing towards easier hands, players and avoid the card sharks or tougher tables.  It would drastically improve you playing and guarantee a winning streak BUT data mining will allow you to tips the odds a bit on your behavioural play.  What I mean is that there may be hands you would normally play that now you wouldn’t thanks to the data from the software.

Now you may be wondering what the difference is between Poker Tracking and Data Mining?  In truth not much except the element of scale.  Data Mining is done on a proportionally greater “bulk” scale.  Data could be gathered from potentially dozens of poker rooms at the same time, which speeds up acquisition and accurate analysis. Again, use of data miners is controversial as many of these tools are.  You probably should check with your poker room to ensure that there are no restrictions against their use.

There are really 3 options for data miners:

  1. Ones that do the updating and hand history building from scratch,
  2. Ones that allow you to import (or require it) raw data usually from 100,000 hands to 4,000,000+.  There are services that provide this data for a flat rate based on the poker room, stakes, table, etc.
  3. Ones that allow you to import (or require it) raw data on a subscription basis.  Again, same options at in the above (but usually smaller data pools) but you pay a monthly fee.

Keep in mind that the best data mining will require additional software (remember, these service usually only provide the data – you’ll need a program that will make sense of it).
