Doyle Brunson – Texas Dolly

Doyle BrunsonOne of the members of the Texas Rounders, Doyle Brunson is a name legendary in the world of poker. Anyone who is really into the game will certainly know who he is. Also known as Texas Dolly, Doyle Brunson was born on August 10, 1933 in Longworth, Texas. It seemed at first that Doyle Brunson would live a “normal” life – with a 9 to 5 job with a sales company. However, he was invited to play a seven stud game on his first day at work and he realized he could earn more than a month’s wages in a few hours playing poker.

He started off with small illegal games in Forth Worth, Texas but eventually moved around several states looking for bigger games. This is when he met Amarillo Slim and Sailor Roberts, whom he partnered up with and gambled on just about anything. They eventually found themselves in Las Vegas and the partnership broke down, though the three remained friends.

So where does the appellation Texas Dolly come from? American sports commentator and bookie Jimmy Snyder was supposed to introduce Brunson as Texas Doyle. However, he misread the name and said Dolly instead. Thereafter, the name stuck and now Brunson is fondly called as Dolly.

Brunson is known for more than his pet name, though. He holds the distinction of winning ten World Series of Poker bracelets, an honor he shares with Johnny Chan and Phil Hellmuth. More than that, he was the first poker player ever to win a million dollars in poker tournaments. As if that were not enough, Brunson also holds the distinction of being one of four poker players who have won consecutive main events at the World Series of Poker. This was in 1976 and 1977.

Unlike any other player, Brunson has two hands in Texas Hold ‘em poker that are named after him. One of them is a ten and a two (any suit). The reason behind this is that this is the hand that won him his consecutive main events as the WSOP. The other hand named after him is the Ace and Queen (again of any suit). The reason for this one is that he states that he never plays this hand. Ironically, the hands named after Brunson are quite weak and he is actually not so happy about it.

More than playing poker, Brunson has written one of the most respected books about poker. Super/System was originally published in 1978 and has been consequently republished in 2004. Doyle Brunson also has his own poker room online – Doyle’s Room. In this online poker room, you can even get the chance to chat with him and actually play poker with a legend. Today, Doyle Brunson continues to be a respected figure in the world of poker. When asked what his ambition was, he answered: “To play poker till I am 80.” At the rate he is going right now, he just might live to see that dream come true.
