Poker Tournament Basics (Part 2)

Poker players can sometimes look for more than the thrill that they get from playing in casinos or online gambling sites. Sometimes they want something that will really give them an additional level of challenges and bring some adrenaline fueled action to their game. And they usually get this kind of thrill by competing in poker tournaments. More and more tournaments are being held in various parts of the country and it’s now becoming a spectator sport too.

In my last article, I discussed the basics of participating in a poker tournament. I offered a number of important tips and information that would help the first time poker tournament player get a better overview of what to expect in a tournament.

Here is the second part…

When it comes to the final table of a long length tournament, the levels will generally be slightly longer although this is not a hard and fast rule. The levels usually last for four to eight hours.

The championship tournaments on the other hand, have approximately two hour levels. These tournaments usually last from three to seven days. The type of poker games that will be featured in a tournament really depends on the casino or online gambling site. Each one will have an idea of what they want to feature, but by far the most popular poker type that’s featured in tournaments all over the world is No Limit Hold’em.

This preference for No Limit is actually a very recent kind of popularity. Before 2004, the Limit Hold em was the most popular poker type. Some of the other popular tournament choices are Seven Card Stud and Omaha (both the hi – lo split and the pot limit). Of course, all forms of poker games are also available in the card room. There are tournaments that are run with a buy in amount, with or without an entrance fee as the addition to the buy in. The smaller tournaments that are conducted online or in local casinos or poker rooms will usually hold the event free – players will not be asked to pay for a registration fee. This is because the tournaments at this level are mainly used for promotional and marketing purposes.

The entrance fees usually appear in tournaments that are considered as large. The fee that is asked is usually seen as a “fee” paid for the casino or online site to run the tournament. There are some special types of tournaments called SNG or single table satellites. These types of tournaments had been used originally at major tournaments as a way of giving players a chance to win a seat in the more “expensive” buy in tournament. There is only one winner declared in these tournaments. Over the recent years, the SNG has evolved especially with the arrival and growing popularity of online poker sites.

Players usually play for the first, second and third place finishes and receive a cash prize instead of a seat in online SNG tournaments. There are also multi-table satellites and super satellite tournaments.
