Nokia Deals Poker With The New N-Gage
Here’s a bit of news that will once again add to the fact that poker has a very wide following:
Nokia is planning to announce more details of its next-gen N-Gage platform at next week’s GDC show in San Francisco, but some game news is dribbling out beforehand.
Glu Mobile has just announced that it’ll be releasing an eight-player multiplayer version of its World Series of Poker Texas Hold’em game for N-Gage, along with ‘a selection’ of other titles.
We’d like to see a whizzy 3D version of Super KO Boxing, and a multiplayer Ancient Empires game, while we’re also intrigued as to whether Glu’s licence for Project Gotham Racing would cover an N-Gage version. With Symbian and Windows Mobile versions on the way, we’re hoping it does.
“We’re excited to be part of Nokia’s mobile gaming efforts, and are impressed with the offering that Nokia has brought together with its new N-Gage platform,” says Glu’s European boss Kristian Segerstråle.
I am sure that countless poker fans out there are quite excited too, especially if they are into Nokia phones. Personally, I prefer Sony Ericsson or Motorola. Still, if it is the World Series of Poker that you are after, then this new line of the N-Gage will definitely be one item on your purchase next list.
I was just thinking, as society becomes more and more mobile, different aspects of our lives are coming together. Try to recall life, say, 10 years ago. If you were already into poker then, how did you engage in your activities? You probably played poker at home with friends, or at another friend’s house. Or maybe you had a favorite casino which you frequented. The point is that you were probably playing “real life” poker. Now go fast forward to a couple of years later.
The Internet would have made leaps and bounds into people’s lives by then. You were probably spending a considerable amount of time online, browsing the web and what not. A short time later, online casinos make the entrance and you were probably hooked at once. So now, your poker life and your online life had merged.
Now comes the mobile phone. Though it has been around for a long time, the original mobile phones were designed for basic communication purposes – to make voice calls. It wasn’t till the late 90s or in early 2000 when the mobile phone hit big time with the SMS. After this, all sorts of applications were added on to the mobile phone. Now, we can do almost anything with it – including playing poker!
I do not know about you but now that I think of it, the way technology has worked amazes and fascinates me. I realize I was rambling a bit up there, reminiscing about the past. Yet it really is great, when you look back and see how different things were back then. It just makes you appreciate what is available to us today all the more.
So anyway, back to the N-Gage, it should be a great thing to look forward too. Pity I don’t really like Nokia. Maybe Sony Ericsson can come up with poker for their phones too!
